Delray Beach’s origins date to the late 19th century when settlers established the farming community of Linton. It was renamed Delray in 1901, drawing its name from “Del Rey,” meaning “of the king” in Spanish. The arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway spurred growth, and after incorporation, the city expanded as a resort town during the 1920s land boom. In the late 20th century, revitalization efforts transformed its downtown and beachfront areas.

The city covers about 16 square miles, with two miles of public beach along the Atlantic.
